Announcing the 2013 Scholarship Winners!
This is the 13th year LVECU has offered scholarships to our young members who are continuing their education. Once again, we awarded ten $1,000 scholarships. Since the program’s inception, we have awarded $115,000 in scholarships.
In order to be eligible for a scholarship, applicants needed to complete an application, write an essay, have a GPA of at least 2.75, participate in extra curricular activities or community service and include a letter of recommendation. We had many qualified applicants and the Scholarship Committee had a difficult time choosing the 10 winners.
We would like to congratulate the following recipients:
Casey Anthony – Casey will be graduating from Southern Lehigh High School this year. She plans to major in Elementary Education and is undecided on her college choice at this time.
Joshua Barna – Joshua will be graduating from Parkland High School in spring and plans on attending Bucknell University. He will major in Geoscience.
Justin Bass – Justin is a 2012 graduate of Catasauqua High School and is currently attending Penn State University-Berks Campus. He is a Nuclear Engineering major.
Lydia Brough – Lydia is a 2012 graduate of Emmaus High School and is also attending Penn State University. She is majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Spanish.
Kathryn Domyan – Kathryn graduated from Emmaus High School in 2012 and is currently attending Susquehanna University. She is a Music Education major.
Anthony Khoury – Anthony is a 2011 graduate of Parkland High School and is attending Penn State University-Berks Campus. He is majoring in Mathematics and Secondary Education with a minor in Spanish.
Taylor Krause – Taylor will be graduating from Parkland High School in the spring and plans on attending Penn State University, where she will major in Elementary Education.
Joelle Smith – Joelle graduated from Southern Lehigh High School in 2012 and is attending the University of Pittsburgh. She is an English/Non-Fiction Writing major.
Emily Wetzel-Ulrich – Emily is a graduate of Wm. Allen High School and is currently attending Temple University. She is a major in their Mathematics with Teaching program.
Brady Yocum – Brady will be graduating from Wm. Allen High School in 2013 and plans to attend DeSales University. He will be entering their Physician’s Assistant program.

Be a Credit Union Super Sleuth and Solve the Mystery!
What kid wouldn’t want to throw on a trench coat, dust off an old magnifying glass and slap on a play mustache to become a detective for a day? Children everywhere are intrigued by the thrill of mysteries and the detectives who solve them. Little do these kids know they also have the ability to tap into detective mode by investigating ways to save and becoming a credit union savings sleuth during the month of April at LVECU.
Introducing children to their inner savings sleuth will help lead them down the path of saving. Visit LVECU during the month of April and help us celebrate National Credit Union Youth Week™. This year's theme, “Savings Sleuth, Solve the Mystery™” shows youth and teens how LVECU can help them use their own instincts and credit union resources to meet financial goals.
Whatever young sleuths are saving for, we can give them the clues they need to investigate ways to save. Through a series of activities, the young savings sleuths in your life will uncover the mystery of saving.

Annual Meeting
Our annual meeting was held on Saturday, February 23rd at Parkland High School. We had a wonderful turnout with just under 200 members in attendance. A report portfolio of our continued solvency and growth was given to members for review (see Board of Directors Annual Report). Eugenie Emert, Nominating Committee Chairperson and board secretary, cast a ballot for the election. William Killgore, Sr. was elected to the Supervisory Committee for a term of three years. William Ayers, Carmen Riola & Daniel Weaver were elected to the Board of Directors for a three year term.
Scholarship winners were recognized for their outstanding achievements and we enjoyed a wonderful performance by the Parkland High School Percussion Ensemble. There was a variety of fruit and breakfast pastries to snack on, as well as a full breakfast of waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and more. The morning wrapped up with a raffle of over 30 door prizes. We would like to extend a special thank you to Mr. Todd Holmes and the Parkland High School cafeteria staff for the great service, and Mark Stutz, PHS Art Director for coordinating the entertainment.
Attention e-Tran Users
We will be upgrading our Multi-Factor Authentication Server (MFA) in the near future. The MFA server is utilized when you sign on to e-Tran. It provides you with your security picture, phrase and challenge questions. If you have not chosen the option to “remember this computer”, you will always be challenged with a security question. With most upgrades, users are unaware of any changes and the log on process is seamless. This upgrade will challenge all users the first time they connect to our new server. If you do not remember the answer to your challenge question, it is recommended that you review your security information by April 15, 2013, including the answers to your challenge questions. If you do not remember the answers to your challenge questions you may get locked out of e-Tran. If this occurs, please contact the credit union and we can reset your account. If you log on and receive a “Server Error” message or continue to get challenged, please clear your cookies and delete the browser history item for logging into e-Tran. Log on to e-Tran via www.lvecu.org. Once a successful connection has been established, you can re-add and save the e-Tran login page as a favorite.
 Households Cut Back on College Costs

Families hit with the growing cost of higher education are taking steps to cut college costs, with students contributing more to the bill while parents contribute less, according to Sallie Mae's 2012 National Study of College Students and Parents.
 The study, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs, has been conducted annually since 2008. Of the total costs of college for the typical family, grants and scholarships account for 29%; parent income and savings, 28%; student borrowing, 18%; student income and savings, 12%; parent borrowing, 9%; and relatives and friends, 4%.
