Use a Patient Advocate

Use a Patient Advocate

Dealing with today’s complex health-care system can be, well, a pain. And when it comes to a hospital visit, it’s important to have someone along to help make sure you receive the type of medical care you need.

In a hospital, emotions can run high. An advocate who’s alert and asks questions on your behalf, especially when you’re not at your best or recovering from a surgery or medical condition, can:

  • Help prevent potential problems such as medication errors and infections
  • Make sure that staff is responding to changes with your vital signs
  • Make sure that you’re receiving the right medications at the right time
  • Communicate what you need to hospital staff.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship, applicants needed to complete an application, write an essay, have a GPA of at least 2.75, participate in extracurricular activities or community service and include a letter of recommendation. We had many qualified applicants and the Scholarship Committee had a difficult time choosing the 10 winners.

We would like to congratulate the following recipients:

IRS Phone Scam

The IRS has seen an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents so far in the 2016 tax season.

IRS Phone Scam

The emails are designed to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software companies. The phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics.

E-mails can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal information, ordering transcripts and verifying PIN information.

Budgeting 101: Help Your Child Plan for College Expenses

For recent high-school grads, college means a lot of new changes – moving away from home, harder classes, and more freedom. But has your child considered the new financial responsibilities they will have to take on?

If your student has been relying on you for cash, it might be time to give them a financial wake-up call. Make sure that your child understands that tuition is not the only cost associated with going to college.

Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting was held on Saturday, March 12th at Parkland High School. We had a wonderful turnout with just under 130 members in attendance. A report portfolio of our continued strength and growth was given to members for review (see Board of Directors Annual Report). Eugenia Emert, Nominating Committee Chairperson and Board Secretary, cast a ballot for the election. William Ayers, Carmen Riola and Daniel Weaver were elected to the Board of Directors for a three year term.

Scholarship winners were recognized for their outstanding achievements. There was a variety of fruit and breakfast pastries to snack on, as well as a full breakfast of french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and more. The morning wrapped up with a raffle of over 30 door prizes. We would like to extend a special thank you to Ms. Lori Seier and the Parkland High School cafeteria staff for the great service.
